Cool – Dork

The Story

When I first started teaching I had dreadlocks which in my students eyes automatically made me “Cool”. Little did they know that under the surface lurked an Ultimate Frisbee playing, Math teacher who wore Croc’s with socks, didn’t own a pair of jeans and likes drawing Ambigrams in his spare time!

This design can be used as a prank on a friend or to point out that sometimes we need to look beyond what we first see.

Defeat evil – With love

The Story

I was once hiking a trail in Nepal and came across a few young children. I took off my backpack, got out a Frisbee and started playing. They were so excited; it was like throwing chips out into a flock of Seagulls.

In their excitement some of the children started pushing and snatching the Frisbee off each other so they would get a turn. I tried picking out individuals to throw to, but by the time they had fumbled the disc there was a pile of others on top of them fighting for it.

It was at this point an older man came to put a stop to it. He stormed into the pack of children (surely not all of them were his) and I watched as he started yelling, kicking and throwing rocks at them. Game over.

I picked up my backpack and snuck quietly away, thinking to myself, “That’s a great way to teach children to not be violent”, wondering if anyone else saw the irony in the situation.

Trying to defeat evil with evil is like telling a child, “Stop F#!%*^ swearing”. Pointless!

Human

The Story

Wouldn’t it be great if we could look beyond labels and recognise we’re all human?

This design reads the same in the mirror because no matter which way you look at it, we’re all human.

Like a girl – Like a boss

The Story

With just their feet, tiny girls endlessly kept the hackey-sack (bunch of rubber bands) afloat. Thirty, forty, even fifty kicks in a row. These girls were only in 2nd Grade but co-ordination like this would put most males in high school to shame!

After this I played Badminton with every 4th Grader. The aim was to have the longest continuous rally and it took 140 shots until I had my winner, another girl.

Welcome to Nepal.

It was amazing to see what girls are capable of when given the chance. Yet, deep down I was sad, knowing that soon these children will be expected to be young women, who cook and clean and aren’t allowed to play. Cultural expectations will eventually rob these girls of their potential…

Then again, is Australian culture any different? The saddest thing I learned as a P.E teacher was that between Grade 6-8 the fundamental motor skills of the average female go backward. Despite having had two extra years of Physical Education, the average 8th grader is less co-ordinated than the average 6th grader. How can this even happen?

In our culture as young girls turn into young women they’re confronted with messages about what it means to be female. “Girls are weak, incapable, uncompetitive, slow…useless”. Eventually they can’t help believing these things and so they stop participating or just don’t try.

We too, live in a culture that robs females of their potential. Girls it’s okay to be good at something. Anything! Next time you hear someone say “Like a girl” let this shirt remind you that what they really mean is “Like a Boss!”

Need – Greed

The Story

Soft drink used to be a treat in our family, one we’d only get on special occasions. I always enjoyed soft drink and when I left home to start to University I realised I could buy as much of it as I liked!

If a small glass could make me happy as a child, imagine how happy I would be now!

In those first few months at Uni it wasn’t uncommon for me to polish off an entire 1.25 litre bottle.
It didn’t take long before soft drink stopped being special, lost its appeal and was no longer enjoyable.

This is how greed works. Promising that you’ll be happy if you keep striving for more instead of enjoying what you have. In the end Greed just makes you sick.

Not just numbers – People

The Story

When listening to the death toll of a tragic event are you ten times sadder when the count goes from 5 to 50?

I’ve taught Maths for a number of years now, and despite my love for numbers they are something I can’t really connect with. Numbers strip people of their hopes, dreams, stories and identity. Sadly, numbers are what our current government has turned Asylum Seekers into. This design aims to turn that around, quite literally, as the numbers 319039 turn into the word PEOPLE when viewed in the mirror.

This design is a great conversation starter to cleverly advocate for those on the margins.

One – Enough to make a difference

The Story

Our team was one point down and time was running out. In my desperation to steal the ball I fouled my opponent badly. I remember feeling like I was in trouble because the referee had blown the whistle extra hard when calling the foul. I was only 8 and I was scared but I couldn’t back down now.

The opposition was given the ball on the sideline with only seven seconds left. I stood in front of the guy throwing the ball back in, waving my hands wildly. He tried to make a pass but the ball hit my outstretched arm and deflected toward our goals. I chased after the ball and picked it up with nobody between me and the basket. I dribbled right beneath the ring and threw the ball up, the siren sounded just as the ball dropped through the hoop. We’d won 8 v 7!

My childhood dreams had come true. I walked away from that match a hero.

Now when I look back on that day I can’t help but think of my teammate who scored a goal midway through the first half. His goal contributed just as many points as mine yet nobody will ever remember it.

Some people choose not to try because their efforts go unnoticed. The reality is that most of the time they will go unnoticed…but they still make a difference.
