Not just numbers – People

THE STORY

When listening to the death toll of a tragic event are you ten times sadder when the count goes from 5 to 50?

I’ve taught Maths for a number of years now, and despite my love for numbers they are something I can’t really connect with. Numbers strip people of their hopes, dreams, stories and identity. Sadly, numbers are what our current government has turned Asylum Seekers into. This design aims to turn that around, quite literally, as the numbers 319039 turn into the word PEOPLE when viewed in the mirror.

One – Enough to make a difference

THE STORY

Our team was one point down and time was running out. In my desperation to steal the ball I fouled my opponent badly. I remember feeling like I was in trouble because the referee had blown the whistle extra hard when calling the foul. I was only 8 and I was scared but I couldn’t back down now.

The opposition was given the ball on the sideline with only seven seconds left. I stood in front of the guy throwing the ball back in, waving my hands wildly. He tried to make a pass but the ball hit my outstretched arm and deflected toward our goals. I chased after the ball and picked it up with nobody between me and the basket. I dribbled right beneath the ring and threw the ball up, the siren sounded just as the ball dropped through the hoop. We’d won 8 v 7!

My childhood dreams had come true. I walked away from that match a hero.

Now when I look back on that day I can’t help but think of my teammate who scored a goal midway through the first half. His goal contributed just as many points as mine yet nobody will ever remember it.

Some people choose not to try because their efforts go unnoticed. The reality is that most of the time they will go unnoticed…but they still make a difference.

THE STORY

The car battery had died, but I was confident that someone arriving at the wetlands would have time to give me a jump start.

A few minutes later a 4WD entered and parked 50m in front of me. I walked over and asked for help as the elderly couple got out of the car .

“No, well umm, I’m sorry” the man bumbled, searching for excuses. “We’re running late for a doctors appointment” the lady chimed in, glancing at her watch to validate her story. I chose to believe her yet it felt like the answer to my request was always going to be ‘No’.

Interesting place to stop if you’re running late, I thought to myself as I walked back to my car.

What happened next was unbelievable. In full view the couple opened up the car, cracked out a Thermos and poured a leisurely cup of tea! As I watched, completely stunned, my eyes met the elderly womans, who guiltily looked away.

I had to stop myself from walking back over and pointing out the flawed logic of running late and stopping for tea…unless, it was coffee in the Thermos and they were running latté!

Nope, it was tea! The cold, milk-less liquid at the bottom of the cup was tipped on the ground, the car was re-packed and they turned to drive away.

The old man’s eyes didn’t deviate from the road ahead for fear of making eye contact. ‘Yes, I’m still stuck here’. I waved goodbye as they left, resisting the urge to do so with only one finger!

Was it the dreadlocks or the colourful Nepalese jacket? I’m not sure. All I know is it’s not fun being written off without even getting a chance.
